What to Do After a Motorcycle Accident: A Snowbird’s Guide

motorcycle accident

Every year, thousands of Canadian and US snowbirds leave the harsh northern winters and head to the warm sunny climates of  Florida, Arizona, California etc.,. During their stay, many love riding their motorcycles across the countryside because it gives them a sense of freedom and adventure.

Unfortunately accidents happen.  For a snowbird a motorcycle accident is calamitous. Snowbirds need to take some very simple steps to ensure their safety and legal rights.

Stay Calm to Ensure your Safety

The most crucial phase of a motorcycle accident is the immediate aftermath.  First, ensure the safety of yourself and any other person involved.  Try to remain calm and call 911 as soon as possible and get the heck off of the roadway.

Move to a Safe Location

If you can do so without putting yourself or others at risk, get off of the roadway and assess the situation.  If possible clear the road of your motorcycle and any debris to try to prevent any more accidents. Because of its size, motorcycles are prone to causing secondary impacts.

Turn on your Hazard Lights

If the motorbike is still working, switch on the hazard lights.  This will reduce the risk of further accidents that may occur in low visibility situations, such as thick fog or intense rain.

Call the Police

Do not hesitate.  Call 911 no matter how inconsequential the collision is.  Having the police involved helps authenticate the facts.  This is required in any instance of injury or laying your bike down.  Your insurance claim and legal rights literally hinge on the police investigation.

Stay at the Scene

You must stay at the accident scene until the authorities arrive – with one exception:  If you are injured and an ambulance arrives follow the emergency personnels’ recommendations.  The police can always locate you at the hospital.

Exchange and Gather Information

If possible, prior to the police arriving, START TO GATHER information.

Motorcycle Accident

Take Photos

The easiest way to gather information is by using your cell phone.  Take photos of the accident scene, motorcycle damage, any other vehicles involved, the surrounding environment, skid marks, debris, traffic signs, and road conditions.  Pictures will help you recall events and a great way to gather licences and insurance particulars.

Collect Witness Information

If you have any witnesses to the accident, get their names, addresses, and telephone numbers. Witness statements of the incident can be beneficial in overcoming legal or insurance issues.
